Although most Americans are already covered by employer-provided health insurance, under the House plan employers would be required to offer coverage or pay into a government fund.
The legislation includes subsidies to help individuals buy insurance, and requires all those not covered by employer plans or the government programs to buy insurance or face a penalty.
With these changes, 97 percent of Americans would have health coverage by 2019, Representative George Miller, a Democrat, said.
Among the sweeping changes in the health insurance industry, it would bar insurers from denying coverage to anyone based on pre-existing medical conditions.
The plan calls for an additional tax of 1 percent which would be levied on couples earning more than $350,000. Those with $500,000 incomes would pay an extra 1.5 percent, and millionaires would pay an additional 5.4 percent.
Notice:
1. Employers would be forced to pay, either on their own or through the government. That should provide hiring incentives, hmm?
2. Get ready for health insurance to be just like auto insurance. You MUST have it. See the second paragraph? What if I don't want to contribute to the bottom line of the insurance companies?
3. If you are "wealthy" we will now take your money, forcibly, to pay for someone else's insurance.
Heaven help us.
